Wytham Estate, nestled beneath the grandeur of Table Mountain in Cape Town, boasts a rich history that dates back to the early days of Dutch colonial rule. Wytham Estate has evolved through various phases of grandeur and transformation.In 2017, A visionary project was embarked to transform Wytham Estate into a prestigious retirement lifestyle estate, seamlessly integrating the old with the new. As part of this ambitious endeavor, Treetops Renewable Energy Systems was selected to spearhead the estate's energy transformation, an initiative that highlights ATESS’ pivotal role in advancing sustainable energy solutions.

A New Era of Sustainability

Since its inception, Wytham Estate has embraced innovation. ATESS has proudly contributed to this tradition by providing a state-of-the-art solar system that reflects both the estate's historical significance and its commitment to a sustainable future. With the integration of 244 solar panels, the PV system achieves a peak capacity of approximately 134 kWp. This ambitious project addresses the complexities of the estate's diverse roof structures through advanced module-level optimization, ensuring peak performance and efficiency.

At the heart of this system is the ATESS 150 kW hybrid inverter, a crucial component that seamlessly connects the solar panels, battery storage, and grid supply. This inverter not only powers the homes of all residents but also supports critical systems such as fire suppression and emergency lighting.

The Power of Local Innovation

Our collaboration with Treetops Renewable Energy Systems has been pivotal in realizing this vision. Helen Ortmann , General Manager at Treetops Renewable Energy Systems, emphasized the significance of this project: "Wytham Estate represents a flagship initiative for large-scale battery storage. Our commitment to quality and safety aligns perfectly with the estate's values."

The system incorporates a proudly South African 400-kilowatt-hour battery, known as Freedom One, featuring 200-kilowatt-hour banks in parallel. This local innovation exemplifies our dedication to supporting South Africa's renewable energy industry.

Impact and Benefits

Since its installation, the solar system has been operational for nearly six months, demonstrating remarkable performance. The estate's capacity to generate and utilize solar energy efficiently has ensured uninterrupted power supply, significantly reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

The system's environmental benefits are substantial. By generating 190 MWh annually, it avoids the emission of 95 tons of carbon dioxide—equivalent to planting 4,750 trees or driving 950,000 kilometers in electric vehicles. Additionally, it conserves 57,000 liters of diesel, reinforcing the estate's commitment to a greener future.

Financially, the system is projected to recoup its investment in under five years through savings on electricity and diesel. With a 10-year battery warranty, this translates into long-term financial gains while enhancing the quality of life for residents and contributing to a sustainable future.
